RETIREMENT 101

Are you dining out tonight?

November 22, 2015

Some of the best things about retiring to the Cape Region are the overwhelming dining choices available and the caliber of the cuisine. There’s no better feeling than returning to your favorite local restaurant knowing you will be pleased with your meal.

My husband and I dine regularly at Fish On in Five Points because we love the tacos at the astounding happy hour prices of $6, and every other item on the menu as well. But important too is seeing the familiar faces of manager Stefana, and the trio of bartender/servers, Jessica, Chris and Luke. One or the other will grin and say, “Would you like me to make you your usual?” Yes, please.

Recently we met our friends Diane and Mace at another one of our favorite places to eat, Pig and Fish in Rehoboth. We waited several minutes for Mace to make his way to the table because he had to greet the cheerful server Chipper. We have renamed Mace to Norm, because as in the old sitcom “Cheers,” everybody knows his name.

The topic among neighbors lately was where to find the best pizza. My husband and I recently enjoyed Crust & Craft, the newest kid on the block. And it was an education to read the review on rehobothfoodie.com and learn about the chefs who often transition from various kitchens.

In case you just relocated here or don’t keep up with the restaurant scene, the expert is Bob Yesbek! His website
RehobothFoodie.com showcases and/or reviews thousands of places to dine. Also, “Sip & Bite with the Rehoboth Foodie” is broadcast from 3 to 5 p.m. every Saturday on Delaware 105.9.

Word of mouth is spreading about Po’ Boys Creole in Milton, and my antique-hunting partner Barbara and I just had to try it. According to the Foodie’s review, “The classically trained chef Mike Clampitt dreamed of owning a small eatery where he could walk back and forth between the kitchen and front of house, visit with his guests and add his personal touch to their dining experience.” The Shrimp Po’boy was one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten anywhere. Don’t say it’s too far to drive. Go!

Lots of restaurants offer cooking classes for those of us who want to better our own skills or just learn something new. Nage, one of my all-time favorite places to eat, will offer two events soon: a Baked Goods class Nov. 21 and Holiday Hors d’oeuvres and Cocktails Dec. 19. Then a winter season filled with soups and other delights happens next year. Hobos, Big Fish Grill and a(MUSE.) all offer cooking classes as well.

Last spring my husband took a bread-making class with Hari Cameron of a(MUSE.) restaurant. He bought yeast and flour, but now we can’t find the recipe. That was a previous topic for this column.

You may want to purchase a Cape Gazette Beach Originals Dining Card by calling 645-7700. You get $15 off one entrée when purchasing another, and it includes 28 popular restaurants. Pssst - Victoria’s at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel never signs it, so you can use it again and again. As we approach the holidays, let’s count our blessings for the scores of people who work in our restaurants. We are so lucky to live here! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
