Art reception for Debby Burk at Gallery 50 Oct. 14

October 12, 2017

Gallery 50 will exhibit art by Deborah Brisker Burk through Saturday, Nov. 4. An opening reception is set from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at the gallery at 50 Wilmington Ave. in Rehoboth Beach, next door to Henlopen City Oyster House.

A Washington native, Burk is an award-winning artist who has been creating art since childhood. She has worked in a range of media including sculpture, printmaking, painting and drawing. Her current paintings are mixed media on canvas and paper. Burk's work has been featured in numerous galleries, collections and solos exhibitions in the United States, Israel, Canada, Russia, Egypt and India.

Burk said, "My work has evolved over the years from a somewhat impressionistic view of the world to an abstract expression of both my inner and outer worlds. Moving from acrylic to watercolor, then on to acrylic and mixed media, I also progressed from dreamlike imagery to more solid shapes with lost and found edges. 'What am I trying to say in my work? How do I keep it alive and fresh for me?' These are the questions that I am always challenging myself with ... as I breathe and respond, so I create. My thoughts are the impetus to the work. My process is intuitive as far as color and responsive in terms of shape."

She added, "I most often start with an idea about a color palette and a specific mood that I am seeking. Once the first mark or sweep of color is applied, I allow my visceral and emotive reaction to guide the process to completion of the work. Sometimes adding, sometimes subtracting from the painting surface. This process evolves and informs from one work to the next. My recent series, Firmscapes and Passages, has evolved to harnessing the images of the land and the sea with varying shapes, textures and lines that express my abstract intent. The chosen surface is either canvas or paper."
