Athletes of the Week Jan. 19

January 19, 2018
Sh’Kai Chandler

This 6-foot-3 sophomore wing brings a feathery stroke and a football frame to Cape’s starting five. Sh’Kai has broken out of an early-season slump to average 9.2 points per night on 52 percent shooting during the Vikings’ recent five-game winning streak. In a 23-point blowout of defending state champs Smyrna Jan. 12, Sh’Kai scored 10 points, hit a pair of huge three-pointers and was instrumental in locking down Eagles superstar Caleb Matthews. He followed it up with six points and two assists in the Vikings’ rout of Delcastle four days later. There’s a 30-point outburst coming from Sh’Kai someday soon – he’s just that good.

Jack Dennis

Jack jolted the Cape basketball team out of an early malaise Jan. 16 at Delcastle when he came off the bench and tried to put the Cougars’ 6-foot-8 center on a poster. Though the junior forward’s tomahawk dunk narrowly missed its mark, his bold attempt woke the Vikings from their stupor and catalyzed a huge Cape run. Six-foot-five and blessed with high-level athleticism, Dennis was a double-digit scorer at Fallston (Md.) High School last season. Though he’s seen limited minutes for the Vikings thus far, Jack is a prime-time player in the making and will be crucial to Cape’s postseason hopes.

Skylar Johnson

Johnson is the quickest thing on two feet for the 9-2 Cape basketball team. Just a sophomore, the 5-foot-9 guard has already established himself as one of the Henlopen Conference’s best defenders and can also score creatively at the rim. Skylar set the tone for the Vikings in their 74-51 defeat of Smyrna Jan. 12, coming out of nowhere to snag the opening tip from two Eagles and finding Randy Rickards for a bucket on the game’s first possession. Skylar finished the night with a career-high 11 points and made life miserable for Smyrna’s talented guards. He upped the ante with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals in Cape’s win at Delcastle Jan. 16.

Kris Rushin

Kris may come off the bench for the Cape basketball team, but he’s effectively its sixth starter. The sophomore combo guard offers intensity, court vision, and unselfishness every time he steps on the floor. Kris piled up a career-best six assists in the Vikings’ victory over Dover Jan. 9 and handed out five more in Cape’s triumph at Smyrna three nights later. Kris has amassed 26 assists on the year and is one of three Vikings with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. A junkyard dog of a defender, Rushin can also get to the cup at will and knock down the three-point shot. When he puts it all together, watch out.
