Athletes of the Week March 29

March 29, 2024
Lindsey D’Ambrogi

The Corrigan Kid roams the attack zone for the Cape girls’ lacrosse team wearing a helmet with her head on a swivel. Lindsay has missed significant time over the last two seasons, the result of extended stays on the concussion protocol injured reserve list. But watch the senior play attack for Cape, and you’ll notice she is not shy about playing in traffic; she sees the field and makes plays. In the recent 8-7 rainy-day win over Broadneck, Lindsay found Lulu Rishko for the game-winner with 17 seconds left on the clock. That was her fifth assist of the game to go along with a goal. Lindsay followed that with two assists and a goal in a dominating 14-2 win over Queen Anne’s County. During the 2023 season, Lindsay had two goals and two assists in a last-second 13-12 win at Queen Anne’s. “We are best when we play fast,” said Lindsay while watching the boys’ team play Tatnall March 27. Cape will be back at it next week with back-to-back games in Maryland.

Mike Guenther

The first time Mike touched the ball against Tatnall in Cape’s dominating win March 27, the Hornets coaches screamed, “He’s a lefty!” That showed scouting and respect for the player. Mike smiled when it was suggested that lefties are kooky, off-centered athletes under any circumstances. “I’m a senior, so it’s my turn to step up and do more things. I’ve played with some great attackers since I came to Cape from New York as a sophomore. Now it's my turn to be one of the players who sets the tone. We need to start games angry.” Mike got cranking in a close game against Tatnall, scoring three goals and dishing off one assist. A look at his production over the last two seasons reveals him always showing up in big games. After starting slow against Tatnall, the Vikings poured it on in the second half to win 10-5. They’ll be back in action Wednesday, April 3, facing LaSalle at Washington College. Coach Geoff Shupard said,  “Michael is one of the hardest-working and most dependable players on the team. His leadership is invaluable to us. We are very lucky to have him.”

Mia Jaoude

An A student at Worcester Prep in her freshman year and a swimmer on the Sussex Family YMCA Tsunamis, Mia recently became the East Field South District champion in all seven individual events, six of which were personal-best times. She broke her own team records and set the district record in the 50-yard butterfly plus the Chesapeake Potomac Swim League record in the 100-yard butterfly. She swam and won the 50-, 100-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle races, and the 50-, 100- and 200-yard butterfly over the course of three days, March 15-17. She also qualified for Y Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., in her 50 free and 100 fly events. She and her relay teammates Zoey Neufeld, Gretchen Maughan and Isla Touw also won first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay and second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. She and her relay teammates Victoria Evans, Gracie Maughan and Jenna Reinhold won first place in the 400-yard medley relay and second place in the 200-yard medley relay, and qualified for Y Nationals in both relays.

Todd Warwick

A first-year player for the Cape Henlopen boys’ volleyball team, this senior has really committed to improving his skill set 1% every day. He posted three kills and a block in his debut versus Sussex Academy March 20. "Todd's finding new things that he struggles with, then invests his own time out of the gym on improving them, and we see the growth on the court. He asks coaches smart questions and shows a true desire to grow," said Cape head coach Tyler Coupe. Off the hardwood, Todd is a volunteer with the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and is studying to become an emergency medical technician. "He’s been an absolute pleasure to coach, with a quiet intensity that other players hopefully continue to feed off," Coupe said. The defending state champion Vikings are off to a 2-0 start with a pair of 3-0 wins over Sussex Academy and Dover. They’ll be back on the hardwood Friday, April 5, against upstate powerhouse Salesianum.
