March 8, 2024
Anthony Andrews

A sophomore 120-pound wrestler for coach Scott Layfield’s Sussex Tech Ravens, this Seaford native entered the DIAA Individual State Tournament with a season record of 35-10. Anthony had two classic battles with Malachi Stratton of Sussex Central – losing 12-10 in overtime in the Henlopen Conference final, then 3-2 in the March 2 state championship final. Anthony placed fourth at 106 pounds his freshman year. Layfield said, “Anthony has 84 career wins, five losses to Malachi Stratton. He’s an awesome kid on and off the mat. He puts the work in on the mat and in the classroom. I’m looking forward to the next two years with Anthony. Hopefully there’s a state title in his future!”

Bennett Brumbley

A Laurel native, this sophomore 150-pound wrestler for coach Scott Layfield’s Sussex Tech Ravens entered the DIAA Individual State Tournament with a season record of 39-14 and 79 career wins. The eighth-seeded Brumbley shocked top-seeded Stanley Pete in the quarterfinals with a 10-8 overtime sudden-victory takedown. Bennett would later lose to Pete in the third-place match 5-4. Bennett placed fifth in the Henlopen Championships while battling through injury. As a freshman, he placed seventh in states at 138. Layfield said, “Great young man. He’s a member of the Runner for Life Club. Bennett has a tank and is relentless on the mat, and that carries over to the classroom.”

Dustin Elliott

A junior 144-pound wrestler for coach Scott Layfield’s Sussex Tech Ravens, this Delmar native entered the DIAA Individual State Tournament with a season record of 45-3 and 123 career wins. Dustin won the state championship match versus Nick Walker of Cape 5-2 after losing to Walker in the Henlopen final 12-4. Points were at a premium in the state final bout. Only two takedowns were awarded, both to Dustin. Dustin placed fifth as a sophomore. Layfield said, “Dustin had one loss to a Delaware wrestler this season; he had three great battles with Nick Walker.” Dustin is a class act in the classroom. “On the mat, he is a warrior. Dustin has goals and he works hard every day to achieve them,” Layfield said.

Hobe Givens

A Frankford native, this junior 126-pound wrestler for coach Scott Layfield’s Sussex Tech Ravens entered the DIAA Individual State Tournament with a season record of 36-9. Hobe, who placed eighth as a sophomore at 126, battled his way through the wrestlebacks and won the fifth-place match over Nathaniel Wood of St. Georges by major decision 15-7. He placed fourth at the Henlopen Championships, losing in overtime to Jazmon Snead of Delmar 7-5. Hobe has 86 career wins, with four losses to Chase Murray of Sussex Central. Layfield said, “Hobe is a gym rat. He leaves high school and trains with MacDonald Wrestling Academy as well as Stratton Trained. He puts in countless hours.”
