Athletes of the Week Nov. 25

November 25, 2016

Jack Ashby

An all-state summa cum laude graduate from Cape in 2016, Jack played his way into the starting lineup this fall for the Lynchburg Hornets, who completed the season 17-2-4 before losing in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament to Kenyon College 2-1 in overtime. Ashby had an assist in the tournament win over John Carroll in the opening round. Jack is a two-way midfield player who will do all the dirty work that doesn’t show up in the statistics, unless you count starting all 23 games for one of the best Division III teams in the country. Ashby had a goal and three assists on the season. He is majoring in biomedical science - enough said - refer back to summa cum laude graduate.

Tyreik Burton

A junior at Thiel College, “Pop” scored 18 points for the Tomcats against the Allegheny Gators in a 71-59 win at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pa. Both teams were undefeated going into the game. Tyreik had 19 points in a 94-50 win over the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburg, including 3-for-5 from three-point land. The Tomcats play at Westminster College at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30. It’s located in New Wilmington, Pa.; you basically can’t get there from here. Burton had serious game while at Cape and he also ran track to work on his already great speed. Burton is averaging 19 points per game.

Izzie Delario

A field hockey player and answer to the trivia question: “Who was the all-state field hockey athlete who played on four straight state championship teams at two different schools?” Izzie played at Sussex Tech 2009-10, then Cape 2011-12. She graduated from Cape in 2013 and headed to UMass, where she became an instant starter. She just completed her four-year college career. The Minutemen finished the 2016 campaign 14-8. They beat Monmouth in the NCAA tournament 4-3, then lost to Maryland 2-1 in double overtime followed by penalty strokes. Izzie had a goal and an assist in the win over Monmouth. Izzie was first-team All-Atlantic 10 in 2016 and a NFHCA All-America third team selection in 2015.

Robert Shorts

The junior two-sport athlete – baseball and football – for the St. Georges Hawks, Robert threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers and intercepted a pass to seal the win over Delaware Military Academy 27-14 in the opening round of the Division II tournament Nov. 19. “I never dreamed I’d have that kind of game in my entire career,” said Shorts. “Robert is a baseball guy first; a 3.4 GPA kid,” said his coach J.D. Maull. “A very humble kid who has a high sports IQ. Takes hard coaching and me on him all the time! I believe he can play both sports in college.” As a junior, he has thrown for 1,300 yards this season. He was an all-conference DB last year as a sophomore. Expect big things from him next year.
