Author Rita Nelson to sign new novel May 18

May 8, 2024

Rita Nelson, a local award-winning author and retired Episcopal priest, announced the publication of her latest book, “Breaking Free.” The novel and its cover, designed by Crystal Heidel, owner of Heimat Publishing, received an honorable mention from the Delaware Press Association’s 2024 Communications Contest. It is a compelling story about Abby Grant, a woman imprisoned in an abusive relationship.

Browseabout Book will host Nelson for a signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at 133 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.

Based loosely on actual events, the story is not focused on the abuse itself but on Abby's journey to breaking free from her prison of abuse into a life of love and peace. It is a story of hope fulfilled.

Woven into the fabric of ordinary life, which family, friends, and the outside world rarely see or hear, is a demon called domestic violence or abuse. It is the solitary confinement of society because it is suffered in silence and alone. It is more pervasive in homes than ever imagined and maims or kills those abused. This violence takes the forms of verbal, physical, emotional or even financial abuse.
Her reviewers have this to say:

Nelson, a Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild member, is a featured author in several anthologies, including the guild’s “Rehoboth Reimagined.” Her first book, “Always Kristen,” and early essays won writing awards. Today, she primarily devotes herself to writing, traveling and researching her family's genealogy. Nelson lives with her daughter Kristen and her Maltese, Loki, in Millsboro.
