The Beacon girls downed cross-district rivals and future teammates Mariner Middle 30-12, while the Beacon boys’ team squeaked out a 35-31 game over Mariner in a doubleheader Dec. 13 at Cape.
Beacon’s Morgan Mahoney scored 13 points in the contest, while teammates Lauryn Head tallied six, Mehkia Applewhite scored four and Brianna Loper and Ella Rishko had two and one point, respectively.
Mariner’s Mackenzie Vitolo scored three, Kelly Bragg, Sara Naar, Taonshaye and Ava Iacono added two.
The Beacon boys were led by Zimere Bolden with 14 points. Tirnan Heffernan added seven, Finn Forcucci and Kayvon Allen each had five. Owen Smith and Sean Wick put in three and two, respectively.
Mariner Middle was led by Chancler Johnson with 19 points. Nick Cox scored four, while teammates Ronnie Lofland and Mekhi Smith each chipped in three. Dylan Henry added a bucket.
Beacon plays Seaford at home Monday, Dec. 18, while Mariner travels to Delmar Middle the same night.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
