Beebe expands bariatric surgery education

February 11, 2017

In an effort to meet the needs of the community, Beebe Healthcare's bariatric surgery team is expanding its educational offerings in Lewes.

A bariatric support group will meet from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the second Saturday of the month at Beebe Healthcare's South Conference Room at the Lewes campus from 10 a.m. to noon. This group is for all those who have had bariatric surgery, no matter where, and for those considering bariatric surgery.

The bariatric surgery team also will be offering a pre-op education class from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of the month at Beebe’s South Conference Room at the Lewes campus. This is a second location for these classes, which are also held in Salisbury, Md. This class is for those who are scheduled to have bariatric surgery at Beebe Healthcare.

Beebe offers gastric surgery and sleeve gastrectomy for weight loss through its bariatric surgery program. Both procedures can help patients lose weight and keep it off.

Losing weight and keeping it off isn't easy. Some people struggle with making the lifestyle changes necessary for success. Excess weight can make even everyday chores such as walking up a flight of stairs or carrying groceries difficult. Excess weight can also lead to medical problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea. For those struggling to lose weight, bariatric surgery may be an option.

People considering bariatric surgery should talk to their primary care physician, come to a support group meeting, call the bariatric surgery team at 302-645-3010, Ext. 5410, or go to www.beebehealthcare.org/patient-care-services/bariatric-surgery-and-weight-loss-surgery.
