Beebe Home Health: Professionalism, warmth, comfort and care, delivered to our home

March 28, 2017

I can't say that having brain surgery was on my bucket list. But have it, I did - and it was a blessing! I started the journey to surgery with pressure in my head when bending over, and with being able to hear my heartbeat in my ear. After having a brain scan at Beebe, I was diagnosed with an intercranial aneurysm. Lucky for me, it was intact and treatable! Early intervention at its finest! A trip to Christiana Hospital to meet with the brain surgeon confirmed that I would have to have brain surgery there and then recuperate comfortably at home here in Lewes.

After successful surgery, the social worker at Christiana made arrangements with Beebe Home Health Care, and my team arrived at my home to begin helping my family and me with my recuperation. And a team it was! Nurses, and physical, occupational and cognitive therapists arrived at my home to take care of me and help me on my road to recovery.

Visits began with the prompt arrival of Elaine Ingram, the admissions nurse, who explained to me who would be on my team and what to expect. She was kind and thorough, explaining everything I needed to know.

Nurse Shelly Tyrell promptly arrived for daily follow-up visits to check my vitals. It was encouraging to know that my blood pressure was under control - and that if we had an issue in the next 24 hours, she would be there the next day to help.

Physical therapists Heather Farkas and Debbie Sheing helped me get moving. It was very motivating to hear them say "You're doing great!"

They were the ones who suggested the cognitive therapist after my husband Steve shared his concerns about some short-term memory loss.

Cognitive therapist Rob Irwin provided me with iPad apps to keep my brain moving! His sense of humor and little tricks, "where did I leave my keys?", were entertaining and kept me on my toes.

Occupational therapist Rebecca Kelly made sure that I could perform daily activities and that the house was set up safely for my recuperation. She gave me many helpful suggestions to make things easier.

The entire team gave me peace of mind that I was healing nicely, and more importantly, gave Steve, my primary caregiver, a small but welcome break during the day. Per Steve, "They gave me peace of mind that Ellen was healing nicely, and I didn't have to worry as much after such a scary operation."

I can't say enough about the team's professionalism, their warmth, and the comfort that they brought into my home. These men and women represent the best that Beebe has to offer, and are spectacular ambassadors for Beebe! I am sure they all contributed to the great outcome I have had. I am nine weeks post-op and back to my normal activities, thanks to my Beebe Home Health Care team!
