Bike path into Rehoboth should go through Grove Park

April 6, 2017

I read with interest the recent editorial concerning the possibility of an additional bridge across the canal for bicyclists coming into Rehoboth. I think this would be a worthwhile expenditure by the state to provide a safe passage from the Junction & Breakwater Trail into Rehoboth Beach.

However, a more immediate concern centers around the passage into Rehoboth Beach once a cyclist crosses the bridge.

As the manager of the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market for the past 10 years, I would strongly suggest that the route go through Grove Park along the edge of the park adjacent to the canal then exit the park at the canal side of the restrooms.

Exiting the park at that point will be much safer due to the high volume of farmers market shoppers in that area of the park.

In addition, this route will keep cyclists away from the high-traffic areas at the entrance of the museum and Grove Park, and will also keep cyclists off the sidewalks. This route, not only would be the safest route it would be the most economical and is supported by Rehoboth Beach Commissioner McGuiness, Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth, and Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes.

This is a much safer solution, and I support it wholeheartedly particularly on Tuesdays during the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market when the amount of traffic in and around Grove Park is at a very high volume.
