Calvachi-Mateyko to sign ‘Navidad Latinoamericana/Latin American Christmas’ at biblion Dec. 10

December 8, 2016

Charito Calvachi-Mateyko is coming to biblion at Second and Market streets in Lewes to sign copies of her bilingual book and CD, “Navidad Latinoamericana/Latin American Christmas.” The signing is slated for Saturday, Dec. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Calvachi-Mateyko, a Lewes resident, was born and raised in Ecuador. Her hardcover book, written in both English and Spanish, and its accompanying CD of traditional Latin American carols, were a labor of love. In them she has woven together the beloved Christmas carols of Latin America, the lyrics to sing along, the prayers for the nine days of Christmas, and the Christmas traditions of 25 Latin American countries. The book is also beautifully illustrated with colorful, original paintings.

"Honoring each other's cultures has always been at the center of my life," said Calvachi-Mateyko. Her passion for cultural traditions and social justice has brought her to where she is today: a lawyer turned restorative justice practitioner, a presenter of Diversity in Latin America for both the Visiting Scholar and Speaker Bureau programs of the Delaware Humanities Forum, and an active advocate for the Latino community in her role as co-chair of the Delaware Hispanic Commission, board member of ACLU, and board member of the Delaware Heritage Commission.

"Charito visited biblion earlier this month, and I was delighted to see how relatable her book and music were among the diverse group of guests at our little shop," commented Jen Mason, biblion's proprietor. "This book would make a meaningful gift this Christmas, and it is also an excellent resource for schoolchildren of all ages." As part of Calvachi-Mateyko's work with the Delaware Humanities Forum, she is also available to visit schools to promote cross-cultural learning and understanding.

Biblion is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 205 Second St. in Lewes. Copies of this and several other local author offerings are available year-round. For more information, call 302-644-2210, or go to www.BiblionBooks.com.
