How fortunate we are!
When flames are jumping through the roof of your neighbors' homes, and lives and property are in certain danger, seconds seem like minutes and minutes like hours.
The droves of trained professionals that descended on our Canary Creek community just after 1 a.m. Monday morning were the answer to many prayers. In minutes, not hours, at least 50 professionals from Lewes, Milton, Rehoboth, and a second wave from Slaughter Beach, Bethany, Millsboro, Millville, Georgetown and Dagsboro arrived and almost instantly, the trained teams of professionals and equipment were attacking the flames threatening five attached townhomes and the lives of their residents.
Watching the intense orange flames being reduced to smoke, then steam and finally extinguished, I couldn't help but think, without the talent, bravery and spirit of volunteerism we had just witnessed in our little Canary Creek (Lewes) neighborhood, what a different picture this tragic event would have presented.
As president of the Canary Creek HOA the purpose of this letter is first, to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our first responders, including two who live in our community, and secondly to ask anyone reading this to reach for your checkbook and make a contribution to your nearest fire company.
Several million dollars' worth of equipment appeared on the streets of our neighborhood in minutes. These volunteers left the comfort of their home and family in the middle of the night, and prevented much greater property loss.
Please thank those who serve and help support the volunteer organizations that stand ready in your hour of need.
With gratitude,
Doug Spelman
president
