Cape baseball falls to Caravel 11-10 in a seesaw battle

Bucs score four in seventh inning to snag victory
March 27, 2017

The Cape baseball team appeared to be in a good position at the end of the sixth inning March 25 versus 2016 DIAA state runners-up Caravel at Chris Short Field. But the Bucs put four on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh and sealed the victory with a three-up, three-down in the bottom of the inning.

Zach Dale slammed a two-run homer for the Vikings, while Zack Gelof and Austin Elliott each drove in two. Starting pitcher David Erickson slugged a triple in the game.

“We were pleased with how our guys never quit and kept battling in a back-and-forth game between two very good teams,” said Cape head coach Ben Evick.

The Buccaneers got on the scoreboard first with a five-run second inning, but the Vikings erased that lead, picking up five of their own in the bottom of the inning. Connor Thompson walked to start the inning, and Dwayne Harmon hit a hard ground ball that was booted by the second baseman. Dale was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Tommy Heffernan walked. Then Zack Gelof came through with a double to drive in two. Finally, David Erickson hit a sacrifice fly to tie it up.

Caravel went back ahead in the third on a solo homer by Colin Adams. Adams went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.

Cape then took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Elliott.

After the Bucs tied it up in the fifth, Dale took a ball deep over the center field fence to add two in the bottom of the inning. Cape added one more in the bottom of the sixth on a Thompson suicide squeeze.

Caravel responded in the top of the seventh with four runs and held on for the win.

“We fell short and are disappointed, as we played hard, and that game could've gone either way,” Evick said. “It's early in the season, and the pitchers on both sides didn't seem to have their good stuff, but our guys are ready to get back to work this week, as we have three games.”

The Vikings travel to Milford Tuesday, March 28, then return home Thursday, March 30, for a game against Middletown. Cape then travels to Smyrna Friday, March 31.
