Cape baseball is looking tough for 2024

Strong senior leadership in the cards for Vikings
March 7, 2024

The Cape baseball squad is moving into the 2024 season with a mission to get back to Frawley Stadium and earn a different outcome from last season’s 10-4 loss to Delaware Military Academy in the DIAA semifinals. The Vikings’ overall record in 2023 was 16-6.

“We are going to be very competitive this season,” said Cape coach Ben Evick, who enters his 20th year as the Vikings’ head coach and holds two DIAA titles from 2018 and 2022. “Everyone is working hard. They’ve been working hard in the weight room. Everyone is strong, and we’re excited.”

He and his coaching staff of Seth Brosius; Dave Gordon, former head coach at Dover; and Cape alum Austin Elliott are plugging in the holes left by 2023 graduation.

Gone is Timmy Hitchcock at shortstop, but junior Brady Kosc is right there. Owen Daminger is gone from second, but Merric Mumford and Isaac Terhune are competing to take that spot. Lex Wescott is back at third. Gage Joseph is playing first. Taking the injured Brenn Scott’s place at catcher are Jase Mitchell and Ethan Carney.

While also competing for an infield spot, Terhune brings experience to left field. Rounding out the outfield are Jaxon Clampitt in center and Brian Fleming in right.

“Pitching wise, we are really deep,” said Evick. “We have Reed Thompson, Saint Mark’s transfer Brad Marks, Jacob Smith, Jaxon Clampitt, lefty Chase Resnick, Jack Simeone, and senior Gage Joseph can come in as a closer.”

“I think we have the best pitching staff in the state,” said Fleming. “Every pitcher from top to bottom can compete with the best teams in the state. Everyone is unique. We have a lefty in Chase Resnick this year, so that’ll be good. Everyone is working very hard. The freshmen are picking up things fast.”

“We are excited that offensively we are all healthy,” said Evick. “We have Gage [Joseph] and Brian [Fleming] back along with University of Kentucky commit Jase Mitchell, and Trey Hitchcock. We have multiple kids that are 6-foot-3. We have strong kids that have worked hard.”

Other players competing for positions include Miles Godwin and Jameson Tingle.

“We’ve got a lot of potential,” said Joseph. “If we all buy in, we’ll have a great season.”
