Cape basketball girls slide by Polytech 50-32

Vikings face Caesar Rodney on the road Friday night
December 9, 2016

The opening game for the Cape girls’ basketball team was point and counterpoint, with the match going to the Vikings 50-32 over visiting Polytech.

Freshman point guard Dania Cannon fought for 11 points - 9 in the first half - while center Abby E’Nama also had 11, including a second-half “over the rainbow” three-pointer that hit the heel of the rim, bounced straight up and back down through the basket.

“We had opening-game jitters, as you could tell in the first quarter (13-11 Cape), but we played better the final three quarters,” said Cape coach Lauren Carra. “We played everyone and in different combinations with an eye on Caesar Rodney this Friday. I think they are the best team in our conference, and they press the entire game, so we have to be ready for that level of intensity.”

An intense second half that at times looked like a roller derby with hip checks and rejects saw two Cape players injured who had to leave the game.

Sydney Pedersen jammed all four fingers on her right hand on a blocked pass, while Logan Shuttleworth went down hard on her troublesome knee.

Tarnia Mathias of Polytech was the leading scorer in the game with 13 points.
