Cape boys’ lacrosse outplays Archmere 11-9

Balanced scoring and face-off wins secure victory
April 25, 2017

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team fought off the rain and a pesky Archmere team April 22 to pick up an 11-9 victory over the Auks for the Vikings’ seventh win of the season.

Cape jumped out to a 3-0 lead and took a 6-3 lead into the halftime break. The Auks came back in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 6-5, but Cape controlled the ball in the last few minutes to put the game in the W column.

“I thought that we played hard for a large majority of the game,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “At the same time, we made the mistakes in the middle of the field against a good team that capitalized on them. That’s what good teams do. ”

In the second half, Archmere scored twice on failed clears and turnovers by the Vikings in their defensive end.

Cape got balanced scoring from six different players.

Attack Greg Boyce and Jaycob Trimmer each hit the twine with two goals. Middies Patrick Monigle, Erik-Stephane Stancofski and Jake Brown tallied two as well, while Brock Maloomian scored once.

“Most of our goals were assisted today,” said Stancofski. “That’s how we like to play.”

Sophomore attack Luke D’Ambrogi assisted on four goals. Trimmer and Boyce each had two helpers while Maloomian had one.

“I thought we worked well as a team,” said Boyce. “Everybody played their part today.”

Cape outshot the Auks 26-24, but the stat that was most impressive was the 18-of-22 face-off wins by junior long stick middie Liam Zolper.

“I saw their wings coming in, so I had to pull the ball out and away from them,” said Zolper. “My wings Dillon [Mocci] and Holden [Kammerer] did a good job scooping them up.”

Cape’s Brendan Kane and Auks goalie Connor Smeader each made eight stops in the goal.

“We gotta clean up some stuff,” said coach D’Ambrogi. “We know what we got to clean up. As a whole, our effort level was good; we just got to play smarter.”

The Vikings left the game at 7-1 on the season, while the Auks move to 6-3.

Cape will travel to Woodside Wednesday, April 26, for a Northern Division game with the Panthers of Polytech.
