It was sudden death in Alapocas-alakazam, aka Alapocas Run State Park, as the Cape boys’ lacrosse team knocked Wilmington Friends from the ranks of the unbeaten 10-9 in overtime.
The teams had split two halves, with Cape winning the first 6-2 and the Quakers winning the second 7-3.
Burke Healy, who has emerged as the stealth assassin of late-game heroics, buried the game-winner for Cape.
The Vikings improved to 10-2 on the season, while the Quakers dropped to 8-1.
Goal scorers for Cape were Healy with four goals, Jack Schell with three, Mike Guenther with two and Anderson Smith with one.
Cape assists were Guenther with three, and Smith, Schell and Brenner Short each with one.
Friends goals were scored by Rhys Butler with four, Nicholas Winchell with two and Kevin Dolan, Declan Grubb and Matt Mckenzie with one apiece.
Assists for Friends came from Dolan and Winchell with two each and Tyler Maheshwari with one.
Mason Trench had 17 saves for Cape, while Ethan Lukach had 11 for the Quakers.
Cape had a 34-32 shots-on-goal advantage.
Coach Geoff Shupard: “It’s always great to get the win, and the boys showed a lot of grit to make it happen, but we made some mistakes in the second half that Friends was able to take advantage of, which is what good teams do. Burke played well and came through when we needed it, and I thought Mason Trench played a good game in the goal.”
Wilmington Friends has upcoming road games at Tower Hill (4-5) Thursday, May 2, and Archmere (7-4) Saturday, May 4.
Cape will host Sussex Tech (6-5) Friday, May 3, in a Senior Night game.
