May 14, 2018

The Cape girls’ lacrosse team was tied 2-2 with St. Andrew’s with 8 minutes to go in the first half of their contest May 11. It was hot, and fans were standing three deep on the St. Andrew’s home quadrant of the field. Upset was in the air.

The Saints had lost at unbeaten Saint Mark’s 9-7 the previous Tuesday. They are a team that embraces the dog roll, and they can bite any Delaware program on their schedule.

Cape’s last loss to a Delaware team was a 13-12 defeat at St. Andrew’s May 2, 2009. That was nine years and nine state titles ago. The pressure to defend is always part of playing for the girls’ lacrosse team at Cape.

The Vikings got to halftime with a 7-3 advantage. The Saints countered with a goal in the first minute of the second half to cut the lead to 7-4.

Then Cape got rolling with an array and army of weapons, outscoring St. Andrew’s 10-1 in the final 24 minutes of the game for a 17-5 victory. The Vikings improved to 13-1 on the season; they had one regular-season game left at Dover Monday, May 14. The Senators are 11-3 and bound for the state tournament.

Nine different players scored for Cape, led by Lindsay Monigle with four goals and three assists. Mallory Jones scored three goals followed by Annie Judge, Meredith Lockwood and Alia Marshall each with two, and Katie Frederick, Victoria Lockwood, Sawyer Walker and Anna Stancofski each scoring one.

Frederick, Lola Messick, Jones and Jody Boyer each had an assist.

Vienna Iacona had seven saves for the Vikings.

St. Andrew’s goals were scored by Hanna Soulati and Nancy Tucker with two each and Heleah Soulati with one.

St. Andrew’s lost to Ursuline 10-8 May 12 to end the regular season 9-6.
