Cape football celebrates 2023 season

February 22, 2024

The Cape Henlopen football team celebrated its DIAA runner-up season Feb. 15 at Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.

The buffet-style banquet took an hour just to feed the room. Many of the ballers went back for seconds, then later when the banquet reached the fourth quarter, the players went to the feeding platform to get a square or two of cake.

The celebration was real. It was the first Cape team to reach the state finals in 39 years and only the second team to win two state tournament games; the other was in 1979. But Cape’s 2024 team won both state tournament games versus Dover and Sussex Central as the away team against teams that had beaten them in the regular season.

The nine-win season marked the fourth time Cape has won at least nine games. The 1979 team, coached by Jim Alderman, finished 10-0-2, while the 1984 team, coached by Rob Schroeder, finished 10-2.  The 1997 team, coached by Brian Donahue, finished 9-2.

Each senior player was gifted his game jersey by the boosters club.
