Cape girls’ basketball falls to Ursuline 52-31

February 7, 2017

After defeating No. 3 Caesar Rodney 54-42 Jan. 27, the Cape Henlopen girls’ basketball team took to the court for a matchup with No. 1-ranked Ursuline Feb. 4. The Raiders proved why they are the top-ranked team, as they handed the Lady Vikings a 52-31 loss to go 14-1 on the season. The Vikings dropped to 9-7.

Freshman guard Dania Cannon scored nine points for the Vikings, as teammates Niyashja Mosley and Sydney Pedersen each had six. Ursuline sophomore Alisha Lewis put up 16 for the Raiders.

“The girls played very hard,” said Cape coach Lauren Carra. “They gave a full 32 minutes and handled Ursuline’s size, speed and depth very well. With Ursuline going 15 girls deep, our eight girls gave everything they had and kept up with Ursuline's constant pressure. Over time we we did wear down and we started turning the ball over, but I'm proud of their fight and their constant effort.”

Ursuline took a 35-15 lead into the halftime break. An 11-point third quarter gave the Raiders a 46-19 lead after three. The Lady Vikings outscored the visitors 12-8 in the fourth.

“Our effort is becoming much more consistent as we have seen over the course of the last three games,” said Carra. “The girls’ mentality is changing, and they’re seeing the positive results that happen when you give 100 percent effort and you play with a high level of intensity.”

The Cape junior varsity team lost to the Raiders JV 56-17.

Cape will host Dover Tuesday, Feb. 7. Cape fell to the Senators 35-30 Jan. 3 at Dover.
