Cape Henlopen Elks were freezing for a reason

March 2, 2024

On a chilly Feb. 4, two brave members of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 ran without hesitation into the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean to raise funds for Special Olympics Delaware.

Polar Bear Plunge participants take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean at the annual fundraiser to help SODE provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for 4,200 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Combining their own funds, personal sponsorships and $250 from the Elks, Buddy Hall-McBride and Lisa Travis together raised $2,496 for the cause.

This year, the fundraiser brought out a record 4,388 plungers, who raised a record $1.5 million for Special Olympics Delaware.

The Cape Henlopen Elks commends its own fearless athletes for braving the 41-degree water and air temperature, and the lodge is proud to be a part of this amazing fundraiser.

“The Elks are all about charity, and what better way to give than to give to Delaware Special Olympics, where 100% of the money stays in Delaware,” said Buddy Hall-McBride, Cape Henlopen Elks exalted ruler-elect.
