Cape High math league wins regional competition
Five Cape High math league members are heading to a state competition, and they give props to their AP Calculus class for getting them there.
“It prepared me the most,” said Trevor Simmons, a junior who placed first in the regional competition held in February.
Teammate Anna Lutz was more direct. “Trevor is naturally good at math,” she said.
Math league competitions are held during the school year with regional competitions usually held in February. Students qualify for the state invitational competition based on their scores during regional competition.
Junior Megha Patel is one of five who will continue at the state invitational competition in April. She credited plenty of practice with math problems as the key to their success.
“We're good at timed math work,” she said. “And after the meet we go over problems that we didn't get right. That's helped a lot.”
Together, a group of eight Cape High students captured first place for the Sussex County region. The team was all juniors except for sophomore Yuxin He. Juniors were: Anna, Trevor, Megha, Emma Ballentine, Claire Lokken, Samantha Tracy and Lauren Steingrebe.
Delmar High School and Sussex Central tied for second.
Megha said the team will receive their medals during the April invitiational that will be held in Dover.
Trevor will receive a trophy at the same time.
Megha said she anticipates the team will do well at the state competition.
“We'll keep preparing like we've been doing,” she said.
