Cape lacrosse pours it on Stephen Decatur 17-4

Vikes have nine goals assisted in win

The Vikings used balanced scoring and a tenacious defense to control play and defeat the visiting Seahawks 17-4 April 11 at Legends Stadium.

“I thought we played well from the beginning of the game, and we didn’t allow Decatur to get comfortable,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “I thought that was good from our side of the field. Once we settled down after the first couple of minutes and got some good possessions, I just felt like we got the opportunity to finish, and in this game we did a much better job of that.”

The wins at the face-off circle started the domination for the Vikings.

“It started with Liam [Zolper], and the wing guys Holden [Kammerer] and Dillon [Mocci] did a good job,” D’Ambrogi said. “But not only doing a good job on the face-off, they stayed on and Holden ended up with two goals. So our face-off turned into good offense.”

Cape outshot the Seahawks 24-15. Brenden Kane made eight stops in the cage.

Erik-Stephane Stancofski and Jake Brown scored three goals from their middie position. Brock Maloomian, Kammerer and Greg Boyce both tallied two. Luke D'Ambrogi, Robbie Neall, Patrick Monigle, Devin Bennett and Ethan Ghabra each scored one.

“We had more assists in this game than any other one so far this season,” said coach D’Ambrogi. “Guys were cutting and people were finding them, and that was good for everybody. The middies were finishing their shots. We had good looks earlier in the year that weren’t getting finished, and the difference in this game, they were getting finished.”

Sophomore attack Luke D'Ambrogi had three helpers while Monigle assisted on two. Boyce, Jaycob Trimmer, Brown and Zolper each had one assist.

Cape will travel to Bryn Mawr, Pa., Tuesday, April 18, to face the Shipley School Gators.
