As an independent voter I have no horse in the race. To the best of my knowledge a budget deficit is caused when spending exceeds income. When this happens in our own households, immediate penalties kick in! Fortunately for us and the state of Delaware, it's law that the budget must be balanced annually or they would sink this state like the cement ship over in Jersey.
It is astonishing that the folks in Lews (pun intended) think they speak for the rest of us when some recommend an increase in taxes to accommodate reckless spending at the hands of the last three administrations. Remember the $11 million 1.5 percent interest loan to Allen Harim (Markell administration)? Who gets that kind of loan, not us.
And, they are re-elected probably by these same dimwits - unbelievable.
First thing, get expenses under control now! Second, per the Delaware Medicaid law, "Noncitizens residing legally or illegally can qualify for coverage for emergencies and labor and delivery services if income requirements are met." This must stop immediately. Medicaid must be afforded to U.S. citizens only! As long as we keep handing $$ out to illegal immigrants in this country we will always be in a deficit with no end in tax increases. Do you know that the current Delaware Legislature actually put a bill forward to make this state a "sanctuary state"? Third, maybe an increase in the toll from $1 to $2 along Route 1 would help?
I seriously don't understand how thousands of homes being built in this state, and especially in this county result in a deficit? Delaware should be way in the black, unless the folks running this state are mismanaging it, which is more than likely the case. Perfect example are the roadways; what a mess. If someone put this plan together in private industry they'd be run out of town.
So, after dangling the carrot in front of seniors/retirees for years to relocate to Delaware with low taxes, etc., the folks running this state now are ready to kick us in the pants. Why should I be surprised! Time to drain the swamp! Just look at our neighbor (Maryland) across the bay.
They finally decided after years of one-party rule it was time for a change! No increase in taxes; get your act together!
