Cape seniors graduate as rain gives way to sunshine

Class of 2016 wins $2 million in scholarships
June 12, 2016

A little wind and rain gave way to plenty of sunshine and happiness as Cape seniors became graduates June 7.

Happiness was the theme of Superintendent Robert Fulton's graduation address to 307 seniors.

“Happiness is the key to everything,” he said.

Fulton told the 2016 senior class to stay positive and socialize to reduce stress during a ceremony delayed for 45 minutes because of dark clouds and rain.

“People who focus on positivity always come out ahead,” he said.

Random acts of kindness and money spent on experience, not stuff, will also bring happiness, Fulton said.

“Be happy. Be safe. Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way,” he said.

Class President Joseph Kung acknowledged the uniqueness of the class of 2016, noting they've been molded, formed, and some baked into the people they are today.

“Show kindness to everyone around you,” he said. “Take advantage of your opportunities and remember how great you are.”

Valedictorian Sarah Dziak said she remembers wanting to be a garbage collector when she was young, although she now aspires to a career in nursing. For those who don't know what they want to be in life, she assured them they will know someday.

“I'm confident each and every one of us will find our place in this world,” she said.

Cape's graduating seniors earned about $2 million in scholarships from more than 70 colleges and universities.

Cape High teacher Carrie Evick remembered many students from when they were freshmen.

Each year, she said, she has watched them mature. She encouraged those entering college to take obscure classes in an effort to expand their minds. And she reminded them that failure is a step in life that everyone encounters. “Your response will define you,” she said.

In keeping with the theme of the night, Evick also shared a few words about happiness.

“I implore you to keep your eyes on the final prize … your happiness,” she said. “If you can't be true to you, you can't truly be happy.”
