Cape soccer falls to CR

Vikings suffer first loss of the season
October 4, 2023

The Cape boys’ soccer team took a 5-0 record into its game against 2-4 Caesar Rodney Oct. 3, but when the Vikings and Riders face off in a rivalry game, anything can happen.

The Vikings were bitten by the bad-luck bug in the first two minutes of the match when they scored an own goal. They couldn’t recover, as the Riders scored three more in a nine-minute stretch before the halftime break.

Caesar Rodney senior William Victory hit the twine twice, while Maverick Lopez scored once.

CR recorded just one more shot than Cape (7-6), and each team had three corners.

Cape goalie Jake Hutchison made three saves, while CR’s Logan Simmons stopped six shots.

“After a fantastic start to the season, it was certainly disappointing to lose to Caesar Rodney in that manner,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We struggled with defending in our box. They scored three of their four goals on throw-ins into the box. We are happy that we were exposed early in the season instead of later when this level of play could eliminate us from the state tournament.”
