April 23, 2018

The Cape softball team moved to 6-4 on the season with a 7-1 victory April 20 over Delmarva Christian and a 14-0 shutout of Saint Mark’s April 21.

Cape pitchers Savannah Reed and Marissa Frederick each put three Delmarva Christian batters in the book via the strikeout.

“Our pitchers have had outstanding performances on the mound and continue to keep us in games by working to keep the offense off balance,” said Cape coach Shannon Timmons.

Chloe Fluharty, Kaeli O'Neill-Willey, Kaniah James and Kelsey Huling each connected for doubles in the game. O’Neill-Willey picked up two RBIs, while Sydney Doel, James and Ryliegh Elliott each had one.

Delmarva Christian second baseman Jordyn DiFava went 3-for-3 for the Royals, while teammate Gracie Fetterman hit a double.

The Vikings continued their winning ways April 21 with a five-inning win over the Spartans of Saint Mark’s.

Reed allowed just two hits in the contest, striking out nine batters.

She also helped herself at the plate, knocking in three RBIs, while Elliott also added three. Haley Rauch picked up two RBIs, and Chloe Fluharty drove in a run. Doel was 2-for-3, scoring two runs.

O'Neill-Willey delivered with a triple for the Lady Vikings, but she was left stranded at third.

Paige Thomas and Valerie Deel had the only hits for the Spartans.

“We continue to try to put the ball in play consistently and make opportunities for ourselves to score. The last four wins have come down to the fact that this team is getting better every day and being disciplined at the plate,” Timmons said. “They are executing with runners in scoring position, and that's obviously our goal.

“This is a young team, but they have figured out how to play together and that it takes a team effort to win games at this level. We are playing good, competitive teams, and the 18-game schedule can be a grind, but they have to work together to accomplish their goals. The team chemistry is good, and we as coaches are enjoying watching these young players develop as the season goes on.”

The Vikings were set to host Woodbridge April 23, while Delmarva Christian traveled to Dover.
