Cape softball shuts out Ravens, downs Decatur
A strong 20 mph wind couldn’t prevent Abby Marsh from jacking a low, inside pitch over the left-center fence to score Hayden Hudson to give Cape a 3-0 shutout win over Sussex Tech April 18 in Georgetown.
Jay’lyn Slater doubled in front of Hudson, then scored on Hudson’s double.
“Abby has been an absolute workhorse for us this year,” said assistant coach Chuck Hudson. “Her pitching has reached another level and the girls are playing great behind her.”
“Our team is playing really well,” said Marsh. “It’s great to have a good defense behind me. It helps with my confidence.”
Marsh went the distance in the circle striking out seven while scattering four hits and walking just two.
Hudson and Kenna Justice hit a single, while Ava Calciano and Alivia Heers slammed doubles.
“Sussex Tech is always a team that plays us tough,” said Hudson.
The Vikings lost to Tech 4-3 in eight innings last year.
“We knew we would be in a battle, and it definitely helped us gain momentum into our matchup with a top Maryland team in Stephen Decatur who had won 10 in a row including a 6-5 win over Sussex Central last week,” Hudson said.
The Vikings took that momentum from the Tech game to garner a 9-5 victory over Stephen Decatur April 20 in Lewes.
Marsh she singled and doubled, knocking in two RBIs. Heers connected for an RBI double, while Calciano singled in a run.
Milena Buehler, Eden Frederick, Kenna Justice, Natalya Roundtree, Jay’Lyn Slater and Bri Windish all had singles.
“Our outfield played great today,” said Marsh. “Natalya made a great defensive play going to her right and snagging a line drive to save runs, and Eden laid down a great bunt to move runners.”
“The team played well and everyone did their job,” said Windish. “Both games were a great team effort. The Decatur win was a huge win.”
“We are currently seven games into a stretch of 11 games in 19 days, so practice time has been limited,” Hudson said. “However, we have been focusing on specific parts of our game, and the work we are putting in has been showing in these games.”
Cape plays Sussex Central Tuesday, April 23.
