December 12, 2017

The Cape girls’ swim team made it two in a row to open the 2017 season with a 106-44 victory over Polytech Dec. 7 at Sussex Family YMCA. The boys’ team moved to 1-1 with a 110-54 showing over the Panthers.

The 200 medley relay team of Madelyn McGreevy, Gianna Vayda and Ava and Aya Daisey won with a time of 2:04.34. McGreevy took top honors in the 200 freestyle in 2:16.01. Freshman Melanie Fritchman won the 200 individual medley in 42.23. Aya Daisey took first in the 50 freestyle with a 26.67. She also won the 100 butterfly with a 1:05.84. Ava Daisey won the 100 freestyle in 1:07.50. The 500 freestyle was won by Lindsey Reynolds in 6:40.50. The 200 free relay team of Julie Heffernan, Olivia Brozefsky, Paige Ballance and Anna Stancofski took first with a 2:07.40. Freshman Lindsay Rambo won the 100 backstroke with a 1:17.29.

“The girls are doing a real good job,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “We needed a meet like this after the tight meet with St. Andrew’s. Polytech has only had a team for two years. They will be good down the road.”

Geppert was quick to praise the younger swimmers on his squad.

“Freshmen Melanie Fritchman and Erin Morrissey are doing a real good job for us, and Lindsey Reynolds keeps improving her times and mechanics. She is always smiling and great to have on the team.”

The boys’ 200 medley relay team Tom Weeks, JP Heid, Josh Toback and Ryan Bixler took a 1:54.07 first-place finish. Josh Toback also won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.93. Weeks placed first in the 200 individual medley with a 2:17.29. Bixler Tobak first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.10. Heid took first in the 100 free in 58.85. Sophomore Michael Cerchio won the 500 freestyle in 6:48.74. The 200 free relay team of Dylan Kaplan, Heid, Austin Mendes and Tanner Dade took first place in 1:44.38. Chase Toback won the 100 backstroke in 1:10.50, while brother Josh took top honors in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.23.

“The kids are working real hard,” said Geppert. “We weren’t able to practice for the first week of preseason, so the kids are catching up. We just need to get in shape.”

Cape hosts Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Dec. 12, then travels to Milford Thursday, Dec. 14.

“Caesar Rodney is returning a lot of swimmers, so they are going to be tough,” said Geppert. “Milford always has a good team.”
