Cape swimming takes two from Sussex Central

Henlopen Conference Championships on Saturday
February 9, 2018

The Cape swim squads swam their final tune-up for the Henlopen Conference Championships Feb. 6, with the girls winning 132-34 and the boys winning 103.5-64.5 over the Golden Knights.

“It was a meet where both teams had one more opportunity to get state-qualifying times,” said Cape head coach Bill Geppert. “We swam well as a team and are looking pretty good going into the tournament this weekend despite being such a young team. Central has some good young swimmers who will compete at both conferences and states.”

The Lady Vikings took first in every event in the meet, starting with the 200 medley relay team of Madelyn McGreevy, Amaya and Aya Daisey, and Erin Morrissey; Amaya Daisey took the 200 freestyle; McGreevy won the 200 individual medley and the 500; Aya Daisey followed a win in the 50 freestyle win and a 100 butterfly win. Morrissey won the 100 freestyle, while the the 200 free relay team of Morrissey, Daisey, Daisey and McGreevy took top honors. Lindsay Rambo took a victory in the 100 backstroke; Melanie Fritchman won the 100 breaststroke, and the 400 free relay team of Madison Buchwald, Julie Heffernan, Lindsey Reynolds and Lily Smith took first.

The boys’ 200 medley relay team of Thomas Weeks, Josh Toback, Ryan Bixler and Dylan Kaplan scored a 1:53.73 victory. Bixler followed with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle and 100 free, while Kaplan also took first in the 50 free, and Toback won the 500 free and the 100 backstroke. Bixler, Kaplan, Weeks and James Heid won the 200 free relay, and Weeks followed up the relay wins with a win in the 100 breaststroke. Cape’s final points came from a first place in the 400 free relay by Heid, Sam Schoenfeld, Chase Toback and his brother Josh.

“Josh Toback became only the ninth Cape swimmer in the history of our program to swim state-qualifying times in all eight individual events,” said Geppert. “That is quite an accomplishment.”

Central’s Hayden Harmon won the 200 individual medley with a 2:27.17. David Pritchett took top honors in the 100 butterfly with a 1:10.58.

The Henlopen Conference Championships will be held at Sussex Academy Saturday, Feb. 10. Competitions begin at 10 a.m.
