Cape volleyball reloads for 2024 season

Vikings return just one starter to hardwood
March 7, 2024

The 2023 DIAA boys’ volleyball state champions are working hard to return to the state tournament with new faces and a excitedly hopeful attitude.

The entire starting lineup from last year’s 17-1 state championship team is gone except for senior Talan Stephens. The squad will rely on 2023 non-starters Bryce Patterson, Blake Catts, Jayceon White and Tias Small to pick up the team leadership.

“I think we have a good mix of talent that can be used in a variety of ways,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Coming into this season, we have a unique situation where we are returning only one primary starter, Talan Stephens, from last year’s team. But the returning non-starters are more skilled and prepared to move up than has happened in years past. Several of our players had the opportunity to play for a travel club team this winter, and that has just increased their skills and IQ by a substantial margin.”

Catts and White have Coupe excited about their promise.

“Blake and Jayceon have really added to their game and are killing the ball,” Coupe said. “Bryce Patterson, who saw some time throughout his sophomore season, has really increased his physicality and developed a range of offensive opportunities to attack the ball. Tias Small continues to impress each time he hits the court with the quick spring in his steps and brute force he can attack with.”

Senior Todd Warwick and sophomores Braxton Figgs and Lawson Whaley are some first-year players who offer good size at the net with a good attitude. Freshman Cruz Vent has already demonstrated a natural ability to set the ball, Coupe said, while noting Jason Harper-Rickards has added strength and confidence.

“These first few weeks we’re going to likely frustrate some of these guys, but we’ve got to run different lineups to see who can really capitalize on what situation to benefit the team,” Coupe said. “Coaches feel good with the players’ energy and desires as of now, and we’re hoping to just continue to make small improvements each day.”

“My feelings on the team this year are the same as they were at the beginning of last season,” said Stephens. “We are still a very strong team, and I think we have one of the most athletic squads in the state. Right now, we aren’t worried about getting to the playoffs. Just like last year, we take it one game at a time and keep progressing throughout the year.”

The team will open the 2024 campaign Wednesday, March 20, at Sussex Academy.
