February 9, 2018

The Cape Henlopen wrestling team closed out the 2017-18 dual-meet campaign Feb. 7 at home, losing to Caesar Rodney 45-15. The loss was the third in a row for Cape, which dropped to 5-7 heading into the Henlopen Conference Championships Feb. 16-17 at Milford Central Academy.

“We lost a lot from last year, and we still are a young team with all starters returning and a bunch of talented eighth-graders coming over from Beacon and Mariner,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “I’d say the future is bright.”

Cape got wins from the Handlin brothers, Jackson at 145 over Caleb Adamowicz 4-2 and Chris at 170 over Sam Ervin 4-1. William Ott at 220 pounds was Cape’s other winner, a 3-2 decision over Brenden Holder. Cape also had a forfeit at 106.

The last match of the night featured the state’s best in the 126-pound weight class, with Anthony Caruso of Cape taking on Cameron Hayes of Caesar Rodney.

Hayes got a takedown going out of bounds with 26 seconds left in the first period. Both wrestlers escaped from the bottom for a point and that was it for the scoring action, as Hayes prevailed 3-1.
