CHEER joins national Let's Do Lunch campaign

Volunteers needed to donate lunch break time to deliver Meals on Wheels
August 18, 2016

More than 10 million seniors in the United States (one in six) face the threat of hunger, and more than 15 million (one in four) are living in isolation. In Sussex County alone, CHEER serves more than 273,000 meals per year to seniors to address these issues. This summer, Meals on Wheels America, in partnership with the Ad Council, is launching its very first national campaign to recruit volunteers to serve the nation's most vulnerable citizens. With the senior population projected to double by 2050, CHEER is joining the effort to help inspire a new army of volunteers in Sussex County to meet the growing need.

Every day, CHEER's volunteers deliver hundreds of meals along with friendly visits and safety checks to those who need them most. As important as the meal delivered is the fact that for many seniors, the volunteer who delivers it is the only person they will see that day. The delivery isn't just about nutrition; it's about the moments of human connection that nourish the senior and the volunteer alike. CHEER relies on many volunteers to deliver meals, typically between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., five days a week.

The national integrated public service campaign, created pro bono by the ad agency Anomaly, invites America to Do Lunch by volunteering during the critical lunch hour period. CHEER needs volunteers who will donate their lunch break time and drop off a meal and a smile to a senior in their neighborhood.
