The president of The Delaware Farm Bureau stated in her letter that their mission is "to promote and protect Delaware agriculture through education and advocacy to ensure a quality of life for farmers and their consumers."
I couldn't agree more!
My objection is not with the farmer, it is with the processing companies. I am afraid that we part ways here. Allen Harim has a miserable record in caring for the lives and livelihood of those who live near their plant in Harbeson and the Inland Bays area, just as Mountaire and Vlasic Pickle have done in Millsboro.
They destroy wells; they put our health and lives and the health and lives of our unborn at risk, and lower the value of our property by their actions. They just will not spend what it takes to be good neighbors.
Allen Harim received an $11,500,000 low-interest loan, through the State of Delaware, to remediate the mess it is making in Harbeson, and what have they done? They have promised Artesian $5,000,000 to remove waste produced at their plant to monstrous lagoons on Route 30 just north of Route 16. They will spread millions of gallons of "treated" waste a day on spray fields where it will leach into the aquifer, the river branches, our wells, and it will harm us.
They aren't fixing the problem; they are moving it.
No, I don't trust the processing plants and resent them trying to make this into a farmer vs. us fight.
This has nothing to do with the farmer, but the processor. They have proven themselves to not be trustworthy. We must resist until the State of Delaware better protects us, because now they are just letting the fox watch the henhouse.
