Children’s programs offered at Lewes Historical Society Feb. 17, March 3

February 15, 2017

The Lewes Historical Society is offering programs geared for students in kindergarten through second grade, while school is out Fridays, Feb. 17 and March 3.

There will be two sessions of children's story time, engaging learning opportunities and history-themed crafts, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at the Cannonball House Maritime Museum. These programs are free for children only, with a suggested donation of $5 per adult.

The Feb. 17 program is titled A Sailor’s Heart for Me. Featured will be the book “Hello, Sailor,” by Ingrid Gordon and Andre Sollie. The story tells of a man named Matt, who lives in a lighthouse and watches the sea every day for ships and for his friend Sailor to return. It will be read aloud by living history character Mr. Gilbert McCraken, a past Lewes resident, former Delaware Bay and River Pilot, and lighthouse keeper of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse during the 18th century. After the story, children will have the chance to create their own sailor’s valentine to take home.

The March 3 program is titled Fun with Feathers. Attendees will meet living history character Mrs. Susan Roland King, a former resident of the Cannonball House. They will gain knowledge about local waterfowl and make their own feathered hats.

The Cannonball House Maritime Museum is significant to Lewes’s history, bearing a scar of a cannonball from the War of 1812 when the British bombarded the town in retaliation for citizens not providing supplies to troops offshore. Now open as a museum, the galleries display a history of the Pilots’ Association, shipwrecks along the coast, the rise and fall of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse and the city’s menhaden fishing past.
