Kids’ learning event set March 23 at CBH

Children's Beach House will host Safety, Enrichment and Education for Kids, a free community event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at Lewes Elementary School, 820 Savannah Road, Lewes.

Local organizations to be represented include Lewes Police Department, Lewes Fire Department, Delaware Technical Community College, Freeman Arts Pavilion, La Red Health Center, R.O.O.T.S., Sussex Family YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boujee Babes and the Little Farm.

SmashMouth Burgers, Grandpa Mac and Kona Ice food trucks will also be onsite offering food and treats for purchase.

There will be egg hunts, a petting zoo and pony rides. Chris Clover, Trash Can Dan, a surprise guest, and the Easter Bunny will also be in attendance.

St. Peter’s Holy Week services start March 24

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes announced its Holy Week and Easter service schedule. All are welcome. 

Palm Sunday services will include Holy Eucharist at 8 a.m. and choral Eucharist at 10 a.m., March 24.

An office of Tenebrae service is set for 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 27. A choral Eucharist service will be held at 7 p.m., Maundy Thursday, March 28.

Good Friday worship March 29 will include a 12 p.m. liturgy of the day service and a 7 p.m. Taizé service. The Great Vigil of Easter will begin at 7 p.m., Holy Saturday, March 30.

Easter Sunday services March 31 will include choral Eucharist with choir and trumpets at 8 and 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary, and Holy Eucharist with hymns at 8 and 10 a.m. in the parish hall.

Milford library board applications due March 24

The Milford Public Library seeks candidates to serve an initial five-year term on its board of commissioners. Applicants must reside in Kent County and within the boundaries of the Milford School District. Preferred applicants will have experience or interest in education and/or legislative advocacy.

The board of commissioners governs the library and seeks to represent a broad spectrum of community interests and occupations. Board members oversee management of the library as representatives of the community in partnership with the library director. Board members assist in creating policies and are expected to act as organizational fiduciaries. Regular meetings are held monthly during regular business hours. Special meetings are scheduled as required.

Applicants should send letters of interest no later than Sunday, March 24, to the attention of Library Director Lea Rosell, 1 SE Front St., Milford, DE 19963, or via email to milford.library@lib.de.us. Applicants should include personal and professional history, what drives them to serve the community, and any additional skills they feel will be an asset to the library.

UUSD to meet March 24

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an in-person and livestreamed service at 10 a.m., Sunday, March 24, with the topic Protest or Parade. The Rev. Tara Humphries said, “We’ll reflect on the story of Palm Sunday and look closely at the ways in which we, as Unitarian Universalists, can understand and make meaning out of Jesus’ radical acts of resistance in this week leading up to Easter. With a brave and thoughtful reinterpretation of an old story, perhaps we will hear anew the clarity of our call to the work of faith-based justice.” For more information, go to uussd.org.

Westminster Presbyterian sets Holy Week services

Holy Week at Westminster Presbyterian Church of Rehoboth Beach will feature dramatic readings, a service of the shadows and communion. All are welcome.

A drama of Christ's triumphal entry will be presented at 10 a.m., Palm Sunday, March 24. Service of the shadows with holy Communion is set for Maundy Thursday, March 28. Jesus’ last seven words will be the focus at 4:30 p.m., Good Friday, March 29. An Easter service with holy Communion is set for 10 a.m., Sunday, March 31. White’s Chapel UMC sets Holy Week services

White’s Chapel United Methodist Church will hold its Palm Sunday worship service at 11 a.m., March 24. 

The Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7 p.m., March 28, and the Good Friday service will begin at 7 p.m., March 29.

The Easter Sunday worship service will be held at 11 a.m., March 31.

DART poster contest entries due March 25

The Colors of Travel is this year’s theme for the DART Poster Contest. Open to school-age children in grades six to 12, the contest is designed to encourage students to learn about public transportation and its community benefits. Contestants also earn the chance to see their artwork featured by DART in various advertisements, promotions and displays.

DART encourages students to capture the experiences from their daily travels. Posters must be submitted by Saturday, March 25, to DART Poster Contest, Marketing Dept., 900 Public Safety Blvd., Dover, DE 19901. Prizes and certificates will be provided by DART and its business partners.

Interested schools are asked to conduct the contest within the appropriate grade levels and forward the entries to DART for judging. Estate-planning mistakes class set March 25

The Delaware Money School will offer a free class on Common Estate Planning Mistakes from 4 to 5 p.m., Monday, March 25, at Georgetown Public Library. Led by instructor Deirdre O’Shea McCartney, Esq., the class covers common estate-planning mistakes and how to avoid them. It will explore some common myths about estate planning and offer suggestions on how attendees can optimize their financial future and legacy for their own and their loved ones’ benefit. Having written, spoken and taught on the subject many times, McCartney breaks down a complex subject to understandable layman’s terms. Managing Taxes in Retirement session set March 27

InFocus Financial Advisors Inc. will offer Managing Taxes in Retirement from 5 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, at Lewes Public Library.

Sponsor Delaware Money School will provide certified financial planner Gregory Holman, FPQP, to instruct the workshop series. Examining various timely tax-related topics for individuals who are at or near retirement, the session will touch on required minimum distributions, tax withholding, Medicare premiums, tax-efficient distribution planning, Roth conversions and other planning items. Millsboro chamber seeks March 28 casino night sponsors

The Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce will hold a casino night fundraiser to benefit Millsboro Little League from 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 28, at Millsboro Fire Hall, 109 E. State St., Millsboro. There will be table games, slot machines, heavy appetizers and a cash bar. 

With sponsorship from the Shrockstars Team of Northrop Realty, Tony Shrock and her team members continue to show support to the community and local businesses.

Anne Angel, chamber executive director, said, “We are thrilled to have such a unique and fun event open to our community. There are several sponsorship levels available to local businesses that will give them brand exposure. There will be a 50/50 raffle as well as opportunities to win items such as gift baskets and more that are generously donated by our members. Some of these baskets are very impressive, and we hope to pack the house."

Tickets will be $40 in advance or $45 at the door. Each ticket includes food and $1,000 in chips to play.

Penny party set March 28 at Milton Fire Department 

The Milton Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will host its annual penny party at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 28, at the Milton Fire Department, 116 Front St., Milton. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The entry fee for tickets is $3. Attendees should bring pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars to play this great family tradition game. All ages are welcome.
