Darby Dash 5K won by Bryan Mack and Susan Dunn

Small race field means more donuts for everyone
October 19, 2023

The third annual Darby Dash 5K, held Oct.15 at Cape Henlopen State Park, produced more donuts than runners, as 43 athletes completed the race. Bryan Mack, 33, broke the tape for the second straight year in a time of 19:39.

“I just love the Darby Dash,” Mack said. “And the custom awards by Half Stockley ... it just doesn’t get any better.”

Beau Croll, pushing a tandem stroller, was second in 22:26. Susan Dunn won the overall women’s title in 23:11, while Tanya Karaman, 53, won the women’s masters race in 23:53.

John Blackford, 46, won the male masters title in 25:17.

“This was an old-school, local crowd of runners who loved Darby and love dogs,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “We don’t need hundreds of runners to have a great race.”

The next Seashore Striders events are the Lace Up for Ag Literacy 5K at Hopkins Farm Creamery, set for 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, followed by the 20th annual Mariners Bethel Trail Run at Camp Barnes in Frankford, starting at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22.

Editor’s note: Darby was the canine companion of Cape Gazette Sports Editor Emeritus Dave “Fredman” Frederick. Darby died in 2021.
