David Mogensen, accomplished musician

April 26, 2018

David Mogensen, 1934-2018, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Atlantic Shores nursing home in Millsboro. His younger brother Palle “Chip” Mogensen Jr. and his sister-in-law Beverley were with him three days before his passing. He is survived by his brother Chip, Beverley Mogensen, sons David Mogensen Jr. in Nagoya, Japan, and Richard Mogensen of Potomac Falls, Va.

David and his wife Betty had planned to retire in Rehoboth Beach after David retired from the U.S. Commerce Department with 40 years of service. However, Betty tragically passed just before their move. David finally settled in his Henlopen Keys home with his favorite cat Tiger, his old piano and his old movie collection. David could also play the guitar, and valve and slide trombone. He also enjoyed composing and playing music for family and friends. He enjoyed the beach and liked to visit the Ocean City boardwalk with his brother and sister-in-law when they visited.

He had a kind and caring spot that kept him busy feeding stray cats, the local birds, squirrels and even a family suffering financially with a mother with cancer to a point of abusing his kindness. Spending a lot of time in hospitals in recent years due to his diabetes, he used his Spanish language ability to have conversations with Spanish-speaking staff and share his Latino CDs. He indicated to the hospice nurse he wanted to go; it was his time. David was strong-willed and always got his way. We love him and know he is happy now without pain, and not having to continue plotting how to escape his “confinement”!
