David Newlin Evans, running enthusiast

David N. Evans, 69, of Bethany Beach passed away peacefully at Delaware Hospice in Milford, Monday, April 30, 2018.

David was born to H. Newlin and Elizabeth Evans of Doylestown, Pa., Sept. 18, 1948. He graduated from Central Bucks High School in 1966 and Delaware Valley University in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in food science. He later earned his master's in business management from Central Michigan and a master's in food science from Rutgers. He was employed by Kraft General Foods from 1970-98 working in Dover, Cranbury, N.J., White Plains and Tarrytown, N.Y. He worked on many products and received patents for Good Seasons, Open Pit, and Shake and Bake. While working in food service, he did product, equipment and packaging work for Kraft. Dave later worked from 1998-2004 at Pepsi Cola in Valhalla and Purchase, N.Y. He worked in the packaging group that dealt with bottle design. He retired to Bethany Beach in 2004.
Dave was an avid runner, cyclist and swimmer. He ran the Boston Marathon twice, the Marine Corps Marathon along with multiple triathlons. He loved running the Seashore Strider races at the Delaware beaches with his sons Mark and Jeff. In retirement, he and his wife Suzanne enjoyed bridge, Meals on Wheels, Angels on the Go, and work with the Mariner's Bethel Mission team. Another passion in his life was being with his family, whether it was body boarding at the beach, skiing in New England, or seeing his sons play soccer.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of almost 46 years, Suzanne; his son, Mark and his wife Sarah of Fairfield, Conn., his son, Jeff and his wife Cate of Lewes; his sister, Deborah Downey of Scituate, Mass.; his sister, Linda Green and her husband Joe of Hatboro, Pa.; his grandchildren Madeline, Ella, Grace, Caroline, Cameron and Nolan Evans; along with his four nephews and niece.
A memorial service will be held at Mariner's Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View Friday, May 4, at 11 a.m., for visitation followed by the service at noon, and luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Dave's memory be made to the Alzheimer's Association of the Delaware Valley, P.O. Box 625, Georgetown, DE 19947, or to Special Olympics Delaware, 619 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19716.
