David Samuel Shupe, retired accountant

David Samuel Shupe, 83, of Lewes passed away Monday, June 11, 2018, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

David was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Shupe of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Pam of Roanoke, Va.; his father and mother, Posey and Bertha Shupe of Laurel; his sister Pauline; brother, Jim; and, lastly, his beloved Goldendoodle Scooby.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Elaine Dewey-Shupe of Lewes. He leaves a son, David Gene Shupe of Virginia Beach; grandchildren Sam and Heather Finley of Blue Ridge, Va.; and a son-in-law, Scot Finley, also of Blue Ridge.

He was very proud that his grandchildren followed him into military service, Sam serving as a medic with the Virginia National Guard, and Heather with the Army Reserve.

Also surviving are brothers Jehu, John, Junior, Milton, and Sam; and sisters Sylvia and Joy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
David was a graduate of Tampa College, earning a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He retired from the General Accounting Office. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in occupied Japan. He also served in the Merchant Marine.

David was an active member of Lewes Presbyterian Church where, among other things, he and Elaine served in the soup kitchen. David volunteered for 20 years with Delaware Hospice, the same hospice that ministered so kindly to him in his last week. David was known for composing hundreds of poems that offered encouragement and support to those in his life who were suffering or celebrating notable life events.

Funeral services with the Rev. Dr. Harry Hughes officiating will be held at the Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, Monday, June 18 at 11 a.m., where visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Committal Services with military honors will be held at the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, Tuesday, June 19, at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be sent to Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE 19958, or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, or to a charity of one's own choosing.
