Defeat the Meat contest at Bethany Blues March 5

February 21, 2017

What happens when a bunch of hungry contestants come face-to-face with a pile of spicy, meaty pigs on a wing? One big, rib-sticking contest, that's what! At 7 p.m., Sunday, March 5, the second annual Defeat the Meat contest is set at Bethany Blues of Lewes. Contestants have already been registering for the meatiest showdown Sussex County has ever seen, and General Manager Strohm Edwards is anticipating a stomach-stretching good time.

"This is going to be an outrageous contest, and a rowdy night in the bar," said Edwards. He is excited to see last year’s champion Kenny Terhune returning  to defend his title. Also returning will be Ducky Sheetz as emcee. Last year's event was lively with 15-20 competitive eaters. As the contest got underway, the audience really got into cheering and jeering as eaters sunk their teeth into the competition.

When the big day arrives, the kitchen at Blues will be cranking out pans upon pans of pigs on a wing, and dousing them in extra hot sauce. During the 13-minute eat-down, no one is allowed to consume any beverages, making the challenge twofold: consumption of ribs and tolerance of hot sauce. It's a tall order, and the winner is not always the obvious favorite.

Whoever can consume the most in the 13 minutes will reign victorious, and will rake in $150 in cash and free pigs on a wing for an entire year. With a prize that sweet, there are going to be a bunch of people hungry for the win.

There will be a limit of 20 competitors. The entry fee is $25 or $15 for VIP members. For more information or to enter the contest, call 302-644-2500.
