Del Tech to offer virtual reality course beginning Sept. 6

August 19, 2017

Virtual reality, the newest and most popular way to interact with a computer-generated simulation of a 3D image, will soon be everywhere, so now is the perfect time to learn about it.

Delaware Technical Community College's Workforce Development and Community Education divison is offering Virtual Reality 101 from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays, Sept. 6-20, or Oct. 11-25, at the Owens Campus in Georgetown. The cost is $39. All resources and access to virtual reality systems will be provided.

Virtual Reality 101 will explore the new world of virtual reality through the HTC Vive. The HTC Vive is a high-end VR headset developed by HTC and Valve Corp. Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will be able to determine PC components suitable for virtual reality, set up the HTC Vive and play space, navigate the Steam VR software and know how to interact with various VR software titles. They will also be able to set up their own VR environment in their home or workplace.

Instructor James Wheatley said the course is perfect for anyone interested in virtual reality or in the future of technology. He said anyone with basic computer knowledge, such as checking email or browsing the internet, will be fine learning the ins and outs of VR.

Wheatley is currently a mathematics teaching specialist at the University of Delaware. He currently has a master's in educational technology from Wilmington University and is pursuing a second master's degree from the University of Delaware. An avid virtual reality enthusiast, he has experience with all forms of VR and has over 100 hours of experience with the HTC Vive. Through his company, VR Wheatley, he has demonstrated and instructed with the HTC Vive to over 500 participants.
