Delaware legislators should address illegal squatting

January 19, 2024

The following letter was sent to Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth Beach, with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.

I have a second home in Rehoboth Beach. I have become increasingly concerned about stories that I hear about scammers who break into homes and are able to avoid immediate arrest by presenting a phony lease. Stories that I have read describe the homeowner forced to go through an eviction process that can take 40 to 60 days or longer to get the illegal squatters out. When the squatters do leave, the house will usually have thousands of dollars of loss due to damage and theft.

I am hopeful that Florida House Bill 621 will be passed soon and can be a starting point for new legislation to stop illegal squatting. Please consider advancing a similar bill in Delaware.
