Delaware State Sussex alums celebrate 75 years

The Sussex County chapter of the Delaware State University Alumni Association celebrated 75 years Nov.18 at the CHEER Community Center in Georgetown. The celebration luncheon recognized the 18 founding members who chartered the chapter to support the challenges of the only HBCU in the state. The chapter is the second oldest chapter of the DSUAA. Philadelphia chartered the first chapter.

The charter members, all deceased, were William “Penn” Fountain, Agnes Norwood Scott, Hilda Norwood, Arrie Jackson Wright Harrison, Alfreda Chester Fountain, Novella Shockley, William Davis, Eva Baynard Evans, Claudia Lockman Loadbolt, Lesley Shockley, Paul Grinnage, the Rev. Ben Rogers, Denver Parker, Clarence Stewart, Paul Selby, Dr. Cora Selby, Delores Norwood Selby and Clarence Warren.

Relatives of several of the founders spoke about the their memories and the importance of supporting the college.

Also in attendance Dr. Tony Allen, president of Delaware State University, and his wife Raina Allen; Leah Williams, DSUAA  president; and Bernard Carr, chapter president.
