Delaware Tech communications students tour IMAX facility

March 23, 2018

Students in Delaware Technical Community College’s Communications Department were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the IMAX facility at Penn Waterfront in Wilmington Feb. 22.

Manager Thomas Potter provided students with a view of the IMAX process, including the exclusive screening and sound process involved with the formatted films. Students from the Introduction to Film class, as well as other students within the program, traveled from the Georgetown campus for the tour.

“Tom and the staff could not have been more accommodating,” said Communications Department Chair Rob Rector. “We try to make it up once a year as this is the only IMAX screen in the state, and the students get a chance to literally and figuratively peek behind the curtain to see the entire process of what is considered the gold standard of film presentation.”

IMAX is a 70 mm motion picture film format that displays images of greater size and resolution than conventional film systems. IMAX is the most widely used system for special-venue film presentations, and by late last year, 1,302 IMAX theater systems were installed in 1,203 commercial multiplexes, 13 commercial destinations and 86 institutional settings in 75 countries.

Immediately following the tour, students watched a screening of “Black Panther” in the theater.

"This was my first time seeing an IMAX movie and it definitely didn't disappoint,” said communications student Ashley Webb. “You feel like you are right in the movie because the screen is so large. The behind-the-scenes tour was also super fun and informative, and you can tell that Mr. Potter is passionate about what he does."
