Remains in place through Jan. 21
November 18, 2017

The Delaware Watercolor Society announced its biannual Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover is open to the public and will remain in place through Sunday, Jan. 21. Ryan Grover, Biggs Museum curator, was instrumental in helping DWS with the exhibition installation.

Mick McAndrews, artist and established workshop leader, acted as juror and judge for this prestigious event. His responsibilities included selecting the paintings to be included in the exhibition and selecting the award-winning paintings. Three monetary awards and four merit awards were presented to artists acknowledging their outstanding artistic skills demonstrated in their paintings.

McAndrews awarded first-place honors to Anna Bellenger for her painting "The Prize" which he felt exhibited superior draftsmanship, color harmony, design and a very entertaining subject. Steve Cole received the second-place award for his entry "Field Boots," because McAndrews felt it demonstrated that common items can become beautiful art. Dale Sheldon was the recipient of the third-place award for her painting "High Tide, Tangier Island." McAndrews said the foreground, midground and background worked beautifully together, creating a very painterly work.

Non-monetary Merit Awards were given at the opening reception Nov. 3 to Christine Heyse, DWS, BWS, PVW; Nancy Mysak, DWS, BWS; Paige Ruby, DWS; and Donna Winterling, BWS, whose paintings demonstrated significant artistic value deserving special acknowledgement.
