Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball remains undefeated in ESIAC play

Malachi Light scores 27, hits 7 threes in 74-56 win over Gunston School
January 25, 2024

Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball has kicked off 2024 the way they ended 2023, with a three-game win streak in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference.

“We haven’t played our best ball yet defensively, but, offensively we’re still making some stuff happen. The guys are coming together and playing well, but we still have a little bit of a way to go,” said head coach Marc Hannah.

During the Jan 23. contest against Gunston School, the Royals were making their outside shooting happen, particularly in the second half.

Delmarva Christian opened the second half leading 29-21, but players were frustrated with their first-half performance. They resolved their disgruntlement by dropping trey after trey on the visiting Herons. Winning the third quarter 23-14 behind junior Malachi Light’s lights-out shooting from beyond the arc, the Royals led 52-35 to begin the fourth.

“One of the blessings we have is our outside guys, but we also had some guys inside start to get going,” Hannah said.

The Herons tried making a run at the end of the game, but the 17-point advantage and red-hot outside shooting were too much to overcome.

“Gunston’s coach has done a great job; that’s probably the best I’ve seen them. You can tell they’ve been well coached and that they’re doing some things right,” Hannah said.

Finishing with 27 points, Light totaled seven three-pointers to go along with his teammates' six. Senior Xavier Efford tied fellow senior Mason Bohinksi with two three-pointers, and his 18 points were second on the team.

“We were just trying to get back into rhythm; as you saw, the first half was a little shaky. We got into a better rhythm in the second half and played better as a team, so that helped a lot,” Light said.

Delmarva Christian will honor former varsity player Ashlee McCoy before the ESIAC doubleheader against Salisbury Christian Thursday, Jan. 25.

The boys' team will welcome St. Mark’s at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27.
