DIAA basketball playoffs begin Feb. 28

The Cape boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will open DIAA Basketball Tournament play this week. 

The girls’ team of coach Lauren Carra will host Mt. Pleasant Tuesday, Feb. 28. The 13th-ranked Vikings put together a regular-season record of 12-8. If victorious, Cape will move on to play No. 4 Sanford on the road Thursday, March 2. 

Milford and Lake Forest will battle in the opening round Feb. 28 for the right to play top-seeded Ursuline Academy March 2. 

No. 8 Sussex Tech earned a first-round bye with a regular-season record of 14-5. The Ravens will host the winner of Laurel and Delaware Military Academy March 2. 

Fourteenth-seeded Sussex Central will host No. 19 St. Thomas More Feb. 28, with the winner heading to No. 3 Caravel March 2. 

The girls’ championship game will be held Friday, March 10, at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.

Steve Re’s boys’ team earned the 17th seed in the state tournament and will head to Camden Wednesday, March 1, to take on the 16th-seeded Caesar Rodney Riders. The two squads split the season series this year, with Cape winning the first matchup 62-46 Dec. 9, while CR turned the tables Jan. 27 73-62. Both teams enter the game with 14-6 records. The winner will move on to face top-seeded Mt. Pleasant (17-3) Friday, March 3. 

Milford earned the 12th seed in the tournament and will host 21st-seeded Red Lion Christian in the first round March 1. The winner heads to Smyrna March 3. 

No. 18 Indian River heads to 15th-seeded Saint Mark’s March 1. The winner will play No. 2 St. Thomas More March 3 in Magnolia. 

The boys’ championship game will be held Saturday, March 11, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
