Delaware's General Assembly is considering two pieces of legislation which will impact the appropriateness of abortions in our First State. Sen. Bryant Richardson has introduced a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks, and Sen. Tim Dukes has offered language requiring physicians to offer an ultrasound to pregnant women who request abortions.
This comes after tens of thousands cheered the result of a vote in Ireland which, by a 66.4 percent affirmative vote, repealed its Eighth Amendment, which forbid abortions. Now, abortions are guaranteed up to 12 weeks and beyond in special circumstances.
Also unfolding in our great country is mass ululating in response to the senseless killing of teenagers in our schools. The repulsive nature of this development is a matter about which nearly everyone can agree. Solutions to this conundrum to not seem to be currently within our grasp. However, the matter of abortion is quite different. Pro-life and pro-choice groups are digging in their collective heels and massing to the voting box to protect their stands.
What is the difference between killing of teenagers in our schools and killing fetuses in the womb? When considering the carnage in our schools, teenagers can hide; they can run and; they can call 911. When considering the carnage in our wombs, fetuses cannot hide, they cannot run, and they cannot call 911. They call only die.
The same people who rightfully decry killing teenagers in schools cheer when they are given the opportunity to abort a fetus. How can this be?
